Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician Programme 2019

The South West Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) programme is managed by Pharmacy Workforce Development South (PWDS). The programme is available across the South West, Wessex and Thames Valley regions.

The programme has been developed in line with the Nationally Recognised Competency Framework for Pharmacy Technicians in order to provide the training and assessment of pharmacy technicians who have been delegated the task of the final accuracy check of dispensed items under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Entry Criteria for pharmacy technicians:

  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Nomination from their chief pharmacist (or designated deputy) to confirm that they are a suitable person for the role
  • Demonstration of qualities and behaviours that are necessary to perform the ACPT role,  including  professionalism, accountability, accuracy, and effective communication skills
  • Demonstration of a good working knowledge of local SOPs, 6 months dispensing experience in current dispensary within the past 12 months prior to commencing the training programme
  • A named Educational Supervisor based within the trainee’s trust who is an accredited ACPT or has equivalent experience at the practice base to be acknowledged as occupationally competent or appropriately experienced pharmacist
  • Certificate of completion of the South West Dispensing Accuracy Assessment

NB: There should be no more than three attempts at any one time in completing the dispensing accuracy logs. If unsuccessful on the third attempt then a period of reflection and dispensing re-training should be completed (according to local SOPs and risk management strategies) before undertaking the Dispensing Accuracy Assessment again.

PWDS has designed the entry requirements to ensure that the trainee ACPT has sufficient experience as a pharmacy technician and has developed attributes and attitudes to accept responsibility of the role.

The programme consists of the following;

  • Pre evidence collection activities to develop the trainee’s understanding of their accuracy checking role
  • In-house evidence collection
  • Attendance at a regional Practice Development Day which will include the ACPT exam
  • Local assessment interview
  • Regional e-portfolio assessment

The programme handbook gives further details about the structure and contents of the programme and assessment process. The handbook (version 13.1 April 2019) can be accessed from this site, or is available in the file library of the e-portfolio.
