Trust Information

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) is the largest hospital in the south west peninsula, it’s a regional specialist teaching hospital, providing comprehensive secondary and tertiary healthcare. Our geography gives us a secondary care catchment population of 450,000 with a wider peninsula population of almost 2,000,000 people who can access our specialist services.

The pharmacy department has some 140 staff including over 30 pharmacists. EPMA is being rolled out across the Trust and in addition uses an electronic discharge system. The dispensary and distribution services are supported by an automated dispensing unit, and a new Aseptic services facility is being planned.

Local Training Programme Information

The pharmacy department has recently introduced a new education and research strategy, phase 1 is now in place, designed around the Foundation framework and supports the continual professional development  and introduction to practice research of Band 6 and 7 pharmacists. Phase 2 for bands 8a pharmacist upwards will follow in due course.

The Pre-registration Pharmacist local programme consists of two offerings, a 12 month rotational programme (3 posts) based at the main Hospital site that includes a two week community placement  and a split programme (2 posts) that is divided into six two month placements. The organisations in which you will spend the placements include a large progressive GP training practice (Beacon medical group), an integrated health and social care services provider (Livewell SW) and at UHP. Having completed two months in each placement, the six month cycle is then repeated. Each pre-registration pharmacist in addition to a tutor is assigned informal support in the form of a “buddy” junior pharmacist

Beacon Medical Group is a 27 doctor practice spread over six sites and was formed in 2014 with the amalgamation of three family doctor practices. The practice supports some 80 clinical placements a year. Beacon has received positive attention nationally and has been recognised gaining several awards

Livewell Southwest , formed in 2011, is a recognised provider of integrated health and social care services operating across the South West, delivering integrated specialist across the region with awards and recognition for pharmacy innovation.
