Trust Information

Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides a wide range of integrated community health, mental health, learning disability and social care services to people of all ages. Currently there is a plan to merge with Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust in early 2020 which aims to improve the provision of care for the people of Somerset

We provide services and inpatient wards from 13 community hospitals across the county, and we provide mental health inpatient services on 9 mental health wards. We run 7 minor unit units and 4 dental access centres, including on the Isle of Wight and in Dorset.

We offer a two trainee placements, one supported by the pharmacy department at Weston General Hospital and one with Yeovil District Hospital Trust.

Medicines Management Team

We are a small team of pharmacists and technicians with admin support and a medicines management nurse. The team is based at Cheddon Lodge in Taunton and we also have an office at the Summerlands Hospital site in Yeovil and at the Broadway site in Bridgwater.

We provide a clinical service to the community hospital in-patient wards and also the mental health in-patient wards. All wards use Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration system which enables the team to offer support remotely if necessary. The team supports the Clozapine clinics across the county, provides answers to medicines information queries from all teams and training as requested.

Currently Yeovil District Hospital pharmacy department are contracted to provide medication for services across the Trust.

Local Training Programme Information

The trainee will be work across our Trust in blocks of time alternating with Weston General Hospital pharmacy department. We work closely with Weston General Hospital to ensure that skills learnt on placements in the acute hospital pharmacy are built upon within our Trust.

While at WGH, the trainee will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of hospital pharmacy which are not provided at SomPar. This is supported by opportunities at specialist Trusts in Bristol such as medicines information, prison pharmacy and CCG pharmacy.

The trainee will work along-side pharmacy technicians and pharmacists on the inpatient wards and will have opportunities to shadow other professionals.

The second trainee who will undertake the split placement with Yeovil District Hospital Pharmacy will also have a structured programme ensuring the trainee achieves the GPhC performance standards.

There may be opportunities on qualifying to apply for a position within the team to continue to build on the skills learnt and undertake a Clinical Pharmacy Diploma or a Psychiatric Pharmacy Diploma.

Other Information (location, transport links, accommodation)

A car would be desirable to enable the trainee to participate in all opportunities offered within the Trust as the services provided are at many locations in the county and public transport is not always at convenient times.

Hospital accommodation may be available but cannot be guaranteed

Taunton, Yeovil and Bridgewater all have a range of leisure facilities, such as theatre, cinema, gyms, and the surrounding countryside offer areas of natural beauty and are close to the coast. There are good transport links – for example, the M5 motorway and rail links give easy access to other cities such as London, Bristol, Exeter and Birmingham.
