Trust Information

Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a smaller district general hospital with 345 beds and a private patients’ wing. It has good road and rail links and is close to facilities, but retains the feel of the rural setting. All services are provided on one easily accessible site. The Trust provides a full range of services, with particular emphasis on enhancing patient recovery times through keyhole techniques and day surgery procedures.

Yeovil District Hospital has an excellent reputation and is consistently rated as being in the top ten of healthcare employers in the country. The Trust employs about 2,500 staff.

The Trust is committed to improving the care it offers and is actively working to improve safety, clinical outcomes and the patient experience. With some of the lowest infection rates in the South West, an independent patient survey scored 9.3 out of 10 for cleanliness of wards and 8.1 for overall care.

Yeovil District Hospital was the first hospital in the country to meet the 18 week maximum waiting times target and consistently offers short waits for appointments and treatment.

We work closely with GP practices, social care providers and our NHS neighbours to ensure our patients stay as healthy and independent as possible. Our collaboration and partnership working includes Symphony Healthcare Services which provides care to more than 26,000 GP patients.

Pharmacy Department Information

The pharmacy is a modern, fully automated department with 2 robots and a well equipped aseptic services unit.

The pharmacy provides a highly valued clinical service to all major clinical areas including oncology, medical, cardiology, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and intensive care.

The pharmacy department also provides a service to Somerset community hospitals, mental health units, as well as local hospices.

The pharmacy is a forward thinking department having a well established medicines management service on the majority of our wards and is currently working towards introducing electronic prescribing.

The pharmacy has recently had a new robot installed and the entire department is being redeveloped with the aime to be completed by January 2020.  this will help us to increase our productivity and improve the service we provide to the hospital and patients.

Local Training Programme Information

The pre-registration trainee pharmacist participates in a well-structured rotational program to gain all round hospital pharmacy experience. Clinical/ward pharmacy, dispensing, medicines management, day clinics, aseptic services, distribution and medicines information are all areas the trainee will experience and gain competence in.

There is the opportunity to visit more specialist departments within the hospital and community experience will be organised to complete the training year. Community experience includes community pharmacy, care home pharmacy and GP practice pharmacy.

The trainee will take part in the south west regional training events and have regular training sessions with all pharmacists. They will be fully supported throughout the year with both mentors and their own tutor.

A copy of the current pre-registration training program can be obtained by contacting the pharmacy department.
